<p>This interview documents a conversation with Dr. Mykal Thomas, veteran educator, longtime member of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and public school teacher in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Thomas reflects on more than three decades in education while discussing classroom leadership, Black male educators, student engagement, teacher shortages, school funding, educational policy, and the changing realities of public education.</p>
<p>The conversation explores teacher recruitment and retention, school leadership, charter schools, educational equity, classroom management, cultural competency, mentoring, middle school education, public school administration, educational leadership, Black male role models, school discipline, student relationships, educational policy, community engagement, and the importance of building trust with students. Thomas argues that effective teaching depends not only on academic preparation but also on empathy, consistency, cultural understanding, and genuine care for young people both inside and outside the classroom.</p>
<p>As part of The Male Perspective: Black Men Matter oral history series, this interview preserves the perspective of an experienced educator whose reflections document the evolving challenges facing American public education while emphasizing the lasting influence teachers can have on students, families, and communities across generations.</p>
