Spatial Dramaturgy in Mr. Carmen by the AKHE Engineering Theatre

The scientific novelty of the article is due to its subject, which has not previously been exposed to detailed academic study: the spatial dramaturgy of the performance Mr. Carmen by the AKHE Engineering Theater (directed by Ya. Tumina, 2003) is considered as an example of the continuation of artistic experiments by Leningrad independent studio theaters in the 1980s — 1990s. The study focuses on the phenomenon of performing in non-theatrical spaces and on the deconstruction of the classical narrative within contemporary theatre practice. Special attention is paid to the interaction between the performer and the spectator, and to the aesthetic properties of the space of the performance which define its artistic uniqueness. The author motivates the introduction of the term ‘pre-performance’ to analyze the blurred boundaries of a spectacular play. Through the analysis of Mr. Carmen, the paper reveals how the essential elements of academic theatre are preserved within experimental spatial conditions and how the structure of the ‘pre-performance’ itself becomes part of the dramaturgy. The research highlights the aesthetic continuity between the avant-garde practices of the late 20th century and modern forms of performative culture outside the traditional theatre building.
