Quantification of sheet erosion using two survey methods: counting and uprooting trees and bloomery furnaces near the Maouri and Bosso Dallols

In the Sahel, water erosion is a key factor in land degradation. This study aims to quantify sheet water erosion on toposequences over recent and current time scales at three toposequences in Koré Mairoua, and Doalaga. To achieve this objective, trees and bloomery furnaces were counted on the toposequences. Thus, the locations of trees and bloomery furnaces were recorded, and the depth of tree root exposure and the elevation of bloomery furnaces exposure were measured. The results show that on the current timescale (30 years), the sheet erosion rate ranges from 170.31 t ha?¹ yr?¹ on the Koré Mairoua toposequence to 9.1 t ha?¹ yr?¹ on the Doalaga toposequence. This rate is 3.6 t ha?¹ yr?¹ on the long-term scale (610 years) at Doalaga. The intensity of sheet erosion is linked to the effect of slope (10 to 15%) and soil characteristics (sandy or rocky). The results indicate that sheet erosion is a factor contributing to the decline in agricultural soil productivity in the Koré Mairoua and Doalaga areas. The results of this study will enable the implementation of agricultural management strategies and help prevent soil degradation.
